More than once, people have asked me "How do you become funny?" Sometimes I don't know if that is a compliment or a complaint. It has always been a question I've pondered because "funny" is not a major in college, we don't study and get our degree in funny.

I really did not understand what went into being funny for many years. The jury is still out whether I do or not. I believe I have "paid my dues" though in learning just what is funny and what is not. And there is as much science to it as their is art.

Now I keep my ears open. I listen to not just the humor but the rhythm of how it is delivered. I watch people's reactions to other people's humor. I take notes. I see that short is sweet.

Shakespeare instinctively knew so many years ago that, "Brevity is the soul of wit". Even then, he had the insight to know that people's attention spans are short. Sure, they want to hear your joke or funny story, but they also have other things on their mind. Even if they think something is funny, if it is long-winded, and takes too much of their time, they may consider you "funny", but chances are they won't come back for more of your humor.

Consider the cartoonist and humor writer. That would be me. I created a single panel cartoon called Londons Times Cartoons in 1997. I based it on the Shakesperian theory that humor was and is the soul of wit. No long drawn out captions. Sometimes no captions at all. The picture would tell the story. It was an experiment. It was off the wall. That year, I posted less than a hundred cartoons on my website. Though I had thought of many others, those were the ones that past the litany test of "what is funny" to me.

So now I have one of the most visited cartoon sites on the Internet, 8.9 million visitors since January of 2005 when we first started counting. It all happened so quickly, it seemed, it would be hard for me to describe just how it did all happen. But I'll try.

I am sure there is more than just one road toward making something like that happen. In my case, it was mainly listening to other people whom I felt were funny, reading autobiographies of funny persons, and studying humor. I watched sitcoms. I went to funny movies. I noticed one-liners in real life were really not much different than one liners in a cartoon.

They got my attention. They were of value. They were something I could repeat to my friends and they would receive enjoyment from it.

Another element of "being funny" at least in the marketplace is to find one's niche or voice. Sometimes that can take time. A lot of time. In my case, I tried stand-up comedy, acting and other such venues for a number of years. The problem was that I didn't understand the art well and was not able to perfect it to the degree to which I wanted.

So I tried writing, and I finally settled for cartooning. I had read the late great Charles Schulz's autobiography in which he said the reason he went into cartooning is because he couldn't do much else very well. That was the story of my life. If it is the story of yours, it is never to late to develop your sense of humor. Listen, read, learn, and have a leap of faith.. .and oh, and don't be afraid to look foolish. They may just laugh at you yet.

Now, some people found mathematics quite easy and picked it up quite fast, while others didn't take to it as good and plodded along kinda slowly. There are 'naturals' at mathematics too.
But in the end, everyone actually learnt to do mathematics. Everyone actually learnt to be able to do addition and subtraction quite easily. The heavier stuff maybe not everyone got, but it soon became obvious that even those who at first had trouble, with a bit of study and a bit of work, it was possible for anyone to be able to develop the ability to 'do mathematics'.

So what exactly is going on here? Well, mathematics is primarily a left-brain activity. Now some people are naturally 'left-brained' people and so have an advantage at left-brained things like mathematics. However, even those who aren't 'left-brained' people can still exercise that part of their brain and develop it to any level they choose. It just takes a little bit more work. The same is true for humour. Humour is primarily a right-brain activity. Some people may not be naturally 'right-brained' people, but they can still develop this part of their brain. So who then can learn humour?

Anyone who has ever laughed at a joke can learn to be funny!

That's just about everyone right? Okay, sounds great, but how do I learn to be funny?
Well, how did you learn to do mathematics? First you were given a formula, then you practiced using it over and over again. It was hard at first - you really had to think. But after doing heaps of problems, it was easy. You could do it in your sleep. It is the same with humour.

So what is the formula to being funny?

Make yourself comfortable here because I am about to share with you the secret to all humour.

The human brain operates by continuously looking for patterns. It does this so that it can constantly predict the outcome of a situation. When a story is began, the brain immediately finds a familiar pattern to associate it to, so that it can predict where it is going. But when this pattern is disrupted and a connection is suddenly made to an entirely new and unexpected pattern, laughter occurs as this new connection is made.

Okay, that's a bit heavy. How does it actually work?

Well lets take an example.

"Before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you do, you will be a mile away and have their shoes."

A bit of an old classic, but it clearly demonstrates what we are talking about.
The first part of this line - the setup - creates a mental pattern which makes you think a certain way. If we just left it here, you would be thinking I am trying to tell you to be slow to criticise someone and first try to understand them. Now I haven't actually said this, but the mental pattern predicts this outcome. However, when I drop the second part - the punch line - all of a sudden this first pattern is interrupted and a connection is made to an entirely new, unexpected pattern. Now I am telling you to make sure you can get away with it and have the advantage. The important thing is though, that there is still a connection between the first part and the second part - it still makes sense. It is just not what you first expected. The first pattern has been disrupted. This is how all humour is created.

So how can I use that to be funny?

First create a setup. You say something which has an implied outcome.
"I would love to tell you just what a great job you are doing"

The implied outcome is that I like the job this person is doing and I am complimenting them.
But then I slam 'em with the punch line.
"But I don't want to ruin my honest reputation."

Okay, not quite the outcome expected, but it still makes sense. This is humour.

All this might seem like a complicated process, but this is the formula for making people laugh. Remember the first time you were given a mathematics formula to play around with? It was long and complicated at first, but with a bit of practice it soon became easy. If you use this formula to create lots of jokes, very soon it will be automatic. You will have trained your mind to instantly create humour on command. You will have learnt to be funny.

I told him that was OK, to get started, but eventually he'd need, and want to, make something totally original. And so he did. And they were...not so great. I told him he was doing great, just keep going. And he did. But he had a hard time with the humor. And he asked me the big question; how do you make stuff funny?

Lots of people think kid's questions are childish, and sometimes that's true. But sometimes they ask questions that are eternal. Questions that they'll still be trying to answer as adults. And humor is a perfect example. What IS humor? It's hard enough to get a handle on defining it, but the mechanics of being humorous are downright greased pig territory.

Basically my comedy arsenal comes down to 2 items. After years and years of being a fan of humor like everybody else and then finally going to tons of Improv schools and becoming an improviser, I whittled it down, so all I need are 2 items to remind me HOW to be funny if it doesn't just come naturally. And that brings me to the only bad news I'm going to tell you. Some people are naturally funny-but you already knew that. And when I was in Improv school I used to ask teaches how could I be funny in this or that particular situation. I was a naturally funny guy, but I couldn't channel it into every one of our practice scenarios. It's like being a ballot dancer and somebody telling you to do your thing in an elevator. It can be done, but if you're not Baryshnikov you gotta have a strategy. Now the 2 tools.

Item one; John Vorhaus's book The ComicToolbox: How to Be Funny Even If You're Not

Item two; Rowan Atkinson's 1992 TV special for Showtime Funny Business

I have a copy of Vorhaus's book in storage with my stuff in LA, so I had to go to the Chicago library to find a copy, and it's always checked out so that wasn't easy. But plain and simple he gives you the fundamentals of comedy. While I was at the library I picked up another book that looked like it was for kids, Mark Stolzenberg's How to Be Really Funny . It's a nice little book. Something he says that IS very important is "make yourself laugh." If you legitimately laugh at something you've done; it's probably funny. He's also looks at various people from the old days too, and that's important because it's good to think about who makes you laugh and WHY.

Atkinson's special is an odd thing. I really don't know how or why it got made. I can't really imagine who convinced somebody it was a financially good idea. And on top of that I don't think it's ever been released. I think my copy is on VHS in LA. And I might have a digital copy out here in Chicago I found as a torrent, but it might also be his Rowan Atkinson Live!

At any rate, Atkinson is very well known as the Mr. Bean guy, but I knew him first as Black Adder Which I'm a much bigger fan of by the way. But in his comedy documentary he breaks comedy down into 3 concepts.

Wrong size

Wrong speed

Wrong place

If you truly learn those ideas, quite honestly, that's all you need. But I strongly advise the Vorhaus book because it will make you able to understand those concepts better. There are many, many, many ways to break comedy down to its "core." For instance; all those Improv teachers I had were able to give me hundreds of little rules. Like the rule of 3 (sometimes five, and never 2), or "yes, and" or this VERY important one; a "joke" (meaning something funny) has 2 parts. A setup and a punchline. Blow the balloon up, and pop it.

The setup and punchline idea can manifest itself in many ways. Like the old standard joke format; "why did the chicken cross the road...to get to other side" Or for example, the straight man and the loony guy: Abbott and Costello, Mork and Mindy, Belushi as a Samurai and whoever came into his store. It's the reason they can get Steve Correll to do a remake of Get Smart without having to worry much about destroying the legacy. Buck Henry wrote the hell out of those characters 86 and 99. Didn't work out for Bewitched . But that's another good example; the situation and the comedy are the setup and the punchline.

Now let's go back to Atkinson's ideas. You have to really sit down and think about them. Or better yet, look at something that you find funny and I guarantee you it will be because of one of those 3 ideas-or a combination. If you go to StumbleUpon you can browse websites with picture, video or all manor of things by following the humor links That kid I mentioned earlier-I took him to see Hot Fuzz and after the movie I asked him to point out why certain things were funny (we were completely unable to do that with Eddie Murphy's movie Norbit). Just keep in mind that when it comes to those ideas it can be nouns or concepts.

For instance, have you ever listened to the sound effects in a 3 Stooges film? When those guys get hit by a pie or a fish it sounds like a gunshot. Wrong place joke or is it a wrong size joke? The sound is too big. Emotions can be the wrong size too. But hey, speaking of old brother teams, try finding something by the Ritz Brothers if you can, and obviously you can go wrong with The Marx Brothers. Their stuff is STILL funny. And since we're in the way back machine already; try looking up The Thin Man Collection. Not slapstick but again, always funny.

I'll leave you with a few examples. funny clip that I found today while preparing the article I'm writing tomorrow. It's a wrong place and wrong speed joke.

And in the photo of me (which should be in the lower right hand corner of this piece and definitely on my profile page). I have an afro, and the joke SEEMS to be the hair (cause it's funny looking), but the hair is actually the setup. The punch line is the fork and toaster.

Q. My company publishes a monthly employee newsletter. My boss asked me to write a funny quiz. I'm not exactly a stand-up comic. Help!

A. Ah, the funny quiz. Lucky you! It's not often that a company has an official sense of humor that they are willing to display for all to read. This is going to be a great assignment for you!

A funny quiz is typically one where the questions and answers have no real purpose other than to make the quiz taker laugh. Although almost anything goes, there are some taboo subjects. Off hand I'd say that anything that pokes fun at a specific person, or groups of people, as well as anything that's anti-semitic, racial, sexual, political, or religious should be off limits. Remember, what one person thinks is funny can offend someone else. Even seemingly innocuous subjects like "hillbilly" or "redneck" jokes might not be funny to someone who lives in the mountains or the deep South (like I do).

You can think of a funny quiz as a series of one-liners with multiple-choice punch lines. Because you are writing for a company publication you have a built-in "affinity group" as there is bound to be some common subjects that are company related and could be made into something funny.

For example, if you work for a software development company then you might have a question that asks:

What's longer: A CEO's week or a programmer's week?

If you're not laughing then you have never had a programmer tell you that the project will be ready in a week.

You need to walk a fine line even when using subjects like this in your funny quiz. Say that your company just posted a 4th quarter loss because a new software product missed its launch date by a "programmer's week". It doesn't take a rocket scientist to determine that you are about to tick off a lot of people if you add that question to your funny quiz.

Try to avoid wornout jokes or cliches. A funny quiz should be funny, not lame. For example, still on the software train of thought, a question like...

Q. How many programmers does it take to change a lightbulb? A. None. They don't do hardware.

...is older than the mystery meat in that Tupperware container in the back of the lunchroom refrigerator. No one is going to laugh at that one. No laughing = not a funny quiz!

The best thing to do is to keep an eye out for humorous, safe things to poke fun at and then write a funny quiz question. My advice is to start right now and don't wait until one hour before deadline. The only thing that's less funny than a lame funny quiz is no funny quiz at all!

'An American in Paris' and 'Funny Face' - Two Influential Three-Act Musicals

American in Paris featured a Black and White Ball as a turning point in its final act, which became a popular theme for balls and fundraisers. The San Francisco Symphony held its first Black and White Ball in 1956, which continues as the premier annual ball today. In New York, after the 1958 release of Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's starring Audrey Hepburn, Capote held his own famed Black and White bash at The Plaza, which was chronicled in Deborah Davis's 2006 volume Party of the Century.

And Funny Face influenced America's most influential First Lady, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. Four years after the film's release, Jackie's first official trip to Paris embodied the apotheosis that Audrey Hepburn underwent in Funny Face after her earlier persona is vividly remade. Dressed in a luscious red Givenchy gown, Hepburn emerges into an all white scene at the Louvre from behind Winged Victory; her arms raise the gown material around her like exotic butterfly wings.

Like Audrey's character, Jackie had also been a bookish intellectual at the Sorbonne in Paris prior to her 1952 Newport wedding to then Senator Jack Kennedy. Like Audrey Hepburn, Jackie was also born in 1929 and 5'7 ½" tall and slim, multi-lingual, artistic and athletic, soft spoken, and also a client of Audrey Hepburn's life-long friend and collaborator, couturier Hubert d'Givenchy. Jackie refined many of their ideas, and her own, under the tutelage of her mentor and friend, Vogue editor, Diana Vreeland, who later ran MOMA's Costume Institute at Jackie's behest. Vreeland was portrayed in Funny Face as the character Maggie Preston, editor of Quality Magazine, played by Kay Thompson who was best known as the author of the Eloise series about a girl who lives at the Plaza Hotel. While a college student, Jackie Kennedy won Vogue's Prix d'Paris competition for organizing an entire magazine edition. In her submittal she imagined herself as "art director of the world." Which in a manner she became as Camelot's Queen.

Jackie was beloved in France, the world's capital for style. Two million French citizens crowded the streets waving American flags, screaming, "Viva Jacqui!" during the Kennedy's official 1961 State visit there. The usually reserved President de Gaulle, the French press, and public were especially rhapsodic over Jackie's televised interviews given in flawless French. Funny Face expressed what Jackie was by nature. And, Jackie's favored ceremonial color, white, chosen for her ethereal Inaugural gown, closed both American in Paris and Funny Face with the female leads dressed in white tulle gowns waltzing off in the arms of their prince, with Hepburn wearing the chicest wedding dress ever designed.

Art, Music, Dancing, Awards:

American in Paris and Funny Face both utilized eye-popping cinematography, vivid set and art design and featured Gershwin songbooks. The male and female leads in each film began their careers first in dancing, rather than singing or acting. At 39-years old, Gene Kelly, requested 19-year old dancer Leslie Caron for her debut film as his love interest in American in Paris. And 57-year old Fred Astaire partnered with then 27-year old Audrey Hepburn as her condition for accepting the role. Audrey had studied dance throughout childhood, holding fervently to dreams of a ballet career. After WWII when she and her mother fled Holland for London, it was a small dancing role there that won her a screen test for Willy Wilder's Roman Holiday with Gregory Peck. Hepburn won the Best Actress Oscar for Roman Holiday in 1953, four years before she filmed Funny Face, and the same year she won a Tony for the title role of Gigi on Broadway, also after being spied by accident; this time crossing a hotel lobby in the south of France. Author, Collette, honed-in on Hepburn and cried out, "There's my Gigi! As Willy Wilder said about Audrey Hepburn, "God kissed her on the cheek and there she was."

Funny Face won an Oscar for Best Art Direction, Cinematography, Costumes by Givenchy, and Original Screenplay by Alan Lerner (who often teamed with long-term collaborator Frederick Lowe to write hits like Gigi, My Fair Lady, Brigadoon, Paint Your Wagon, and Camelot, which of course became synonymous with the Kennedy Administration.) Plus a Director's Guild Award for outstanding directorial achievement by Stanley Donen, also a choreographer (and who later directed Gene Kelly in Singing in the Rain, and Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant together in Charade, about which Donen said there was never a more enchanting couple in film history.) Funny Face also won a Palme D'Or at Cannes. And a Laurel Award from the Writer's Guild of America for Best Written American Musical.

American in Paris was nominated for eight Oscars and received six, including Academy Awards and Golden Globes for Best Picture and Best Director; a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor, Gene Kelly. In addition, Kelly received his only Oscar, as an honorary award that year for "versatility as an actor, singer, director and dancer, and specifically for his brilliant achievements in the art of choreography." The film also received Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Musical Score, Best Writing, Scoring and Screenplay, and Best Editing,

American in Paris' 18-minute phantasmagoria at the end cost half-a-million to produce, making it one of the longest and most expensive dance pieces in film history. Producer Arthur Freed was MGM's famed czar of musicals and lured then Broadway genius Vincent Minnelli to direct some of the greatest films of the 20th Century, including American in Paris where so many scenes echo with Minnelli's stagecraft, as do others like his Meet Me in St. Louis, Kismet, Brigadoon, and Gigi.

The tonal differences in the two films is that Funny Face is the wittier, more sophisticated film, with a more absorbing plot that holds up with repeated viewings. Astaire and Hepburn were much more elegant, deft and subtle. Gene Kelly himself said that Astaire was the more aristocratic dancer and that his own dancing reflected his background in athletics and gymnastics, plus his everyman Pal Joey persona . He termed Astaire the Cary Grant of dance, to his Marlon Brando. Kelly aimed for a distinct American look. Astaire, and Hepburn were European at heart. Ironically, Leslie Caron, while being French herself, very much echoes Kelly's exuberantly American style.

The costumes in Funny Face were hands down superior. Audrey Hepburn's iconic image remains undated fifty years later. In fact, director Stanley Donen said that Audrey Hepburn was much more about fashion than acting or dancing. One of Audrey's rare disagreements with any director occurred when Donen insisted she wear white socks along with the skin tight black slacks and sweater in her solo dance number in the Paris beatnik club. She was reduced to tears from fear the white socks would "break the line." Hepburn spoke of the importance of the silhouette and that clothes should be a sleeked down vase that contains the flower. The idea of the white socks she thought was ruinous, though later, she admitted it had worked.

At MGM Arthur Freed acquired the American in Paris title from Ira Gershwin. It was from one of three of George Gershwin's symphonies, (the other two were Porgy and Bess, and Rhapsody in Blue) and became the title song. Tragically, the prolific musical genius George died much too young in 1937 at age 38 following surgery for a brain tumor to see one of his symphonies made into a major film.

Funny Face's Marketing Snafu

Hepburn had just completed King Vidor's War and Peace (1956) and wanted something light like Roman Holiday (1953) or Sabrina (1954.) She was in Paris when she first received the Funny Face script. Her first husband, Mel Ferrer said that she generally took three days to decide, but read and accepted Donen's project, which was originally named Wedding Day, in just two hours. Her mother said Funny Face was "Audrey, all the way through," while Musical Film Magazine called Funny Face the most "directorially ravishing of all American films," and Rex Reed said it was the "Best fashion show ever recorded on film." But the marketing posters fail to project any of that.

American in Paris had superior film posters. Funny Face posters failed in two ways. First, they were varied and therefore never cemented one single strong 'brand' in the public's mind that conveyed the memorable story in a glance. Second, it was a marvelously colorful film yet most of the poster images were muddied. It was Audrey Hepburn's first American film not to gross in the top ten of films in the year of its release. For many film fans her titles: Roman Holiday, Sabrina, Breakfast at Tiffany's, conjure distinct images, while Funny Face does not.

For me, An American in Paris relies on flamboyance, and seems larger because of its theatricality, though Funny Face is only ten minutes shorter and beautifully cohesive. And while the budgets for both films were similar, many scenes in American in Paris were shot on stage sets. Funny Face, filmed mostly on location, sustains an authenticity that makes watching it a pleasure, again and again.

I cannot watch the metamorphosis of Hepburn's character without recalling that this was the little girl in Nazi occupied Holland who saw her family broken apart, her lovely home ruined, her uncles taken out and shot, who was starved and existed on flower bulbs. She'd been grabbed by a machine-gun toting guard and put on line for a bus bound to a work camp, and fortunately broke away. As a child she aided the WWII Dutch resistance, grew to become a great humanitarian, an Ambassador for UNICEF, and my favorite actress.

A fighter strips down to the barest essentials, the essence. Audrey Hepburn's childhood was a fight to survive the horrors of war. As Hubert d' Givenchy said, she became a "very precise person," and this shows in her acting that always conveys the essence.

For me, Funny Face personifies charm, magic, beauty and the idea that when we open our eyes to eternal things everything changes.

I find ultimate value in what takes me to the lovely places. Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face. One of my all-time favorite films. And that's a wrap.

Some trainers, teachers and other communicators wish they could add humor to
their presentations, but they think, "I'm like the Muppets Fozzy Bear: I'm not funny."

The truth everyone is funny; including Fozzy; including you. More importantly, YOU
are funny, not in the same way that other people are, but in your own unique
fashion. After all, one of the keys to relationships (romantic, plutonic or
professional) is the ability to laugh together. You already do that in your daily life.
All you need to do now is to take those pre-existing skills and develop them in a
focused way. Here's how legendary funny man Steve Allen explained it.

"The popular conception of a humorist or comedian is of someone who writes, does
or says funny things. But a funny person is also someone to whom funny things
happen. The comedian's experiences are probably no more amusing than others;
he or she simply has a certain sensitivity to the environment and circumstances and
so perceives humor that a more serious person might miss."

Below I offer eight tips that can help you perceive, absorb and harness the humor
around you.

Tip 1. Surround yourself with humor.

Start your day by looking at a humorous daily calendar, listen to humor on your way
to work, display silly signs at your work location and prop up your office. Items like
daily quote calendars; silly hats and wind up toys have a positive effect on your
emotions and those of the people you come in contact with. Some of the items I
have collected and currently display in my office include a plastic shovel attached to
a neck lanyard (for boring meetings), a skeleton and a crown (my emergency Hamlet
kit for pontificating), various hats (Mounty for finding someone, Viking for going on
adventures and Outback for taking walk-abouts) and a Far Side daily cartoon
calendar. I do it because they help me think funny. Surrounding yourself with these
kinds of items will place you in a humorous mood and create an aura of funny about
you that makes it easier for other people to accept you as humorous.

Tip 2. Look for the absurdity in daily life.

Fortunately for funny people, the business and academic worlds abound with
endless absurdity. There are the inane policies, bureaucracies and inarticulate
memos to enjoy. There's also the unintentional statements of life: you have to hit
"delete" to start Windows; you land at a "terminal" when flying; and you park on
"driveways" and drive on "parkways." It's everywhere, if you look for it. If you cannot
find it yourself, read Dilbert. If you can laugh at the daily absurdities, you will be
less stressed when the bizarre happens and more in touch with the grand adventure
that life is.

Tip 3. Listen to comedians.

The late night comedians provide a daily lesson in being funny. Pay attention to
them, not as an audience member, but as a technician. Focus on the structure of the
jokes they tell. In this way, you can analyze the joke formulas without being
distracted by the delivery. Once you know the basic structures they use, focus on
their delivery techniques. Soon you will begin to notice the cadences they use, the
pauses they take and the little ticks and quirks they have that bring their humor to
life.

Tip 4. Read books about being funny.

Many comedians are more than willing to share their secrets. By simply searching
through a book store web site, you can discover that being comedic is a simple
combination of state of mind and solid technique.

Tip 5. Join "Joke-of-the-Day" lists.

Joke-of-the-day lists are a part of my strategy for finding funny stuff. Although I
switch lists from time to time, I'm currently on two. I am not suggesting that you
"lift" the jokes you read there. That would be, well, stealing. I am however
suggesting that you can use those jokes to learn how jokes are constructed and to
place yourself in a humorous frame of mind. Once you become adept at spotting the
joke telling formulas, you can use the jokes you read at these sites to write your
own jokes.

Tip 6. Build a collection of all-purpose funnies.

Start a funny file and whenever you read, hear or see something you consider funny,
print it out or write it down and file it. Soon, you will have built a collection of jokes
and cartoons you can refer to whenever you need to create a line. The material you
have collected will help you brainstorm creating your own.

Tip 7. Develop some standard lines you can use over and over.

Steve Allen once commented as follows.

"Comics with this ability (to ad-lib) are extremely rare. There may be fewer than fifty
professional comedians on the planet that are skilled at doing it. (Most) comedians
are indeed working without a script, but there is the crucial distinction that what
they are doing is recalling jokes that already exist, which they apply to the situation
of the moment. This is no small feat either, since one has to think rapidly and also
have a remarkable memory -- a memory car file through which the comic's brain
can riffle at lightning speed. But again, as impressive as this feat is, it is more a
matter of craftsmanship and professionalism than art."

You can reach a degree of this professionalism by learning the craft. When you
notice that learners have laughed at a comment you made, make a mental note of
what happened and try to replicate it with another audience. If your get the same
laugh in front of three audiences, keep it; play with it; expand it. If it stops working,
revert to the original line and lock it in. Then begin searching for another line.
Continue in this manner over a period of time and you will develop your own
comedic library of "ad-libs" to draw upon as the situation warrants.

Tip 8. Have fun.

This is perhaps the biggest secret of being funny. The audience will not laugh if you
are not having fun. Your demeanor sets the expectation. If you exude enjoyment of
the world around you, and of the events and learnings that occurs within your
classroom, your trainees will join you. They will also join you if you choose to regard
what you are doing as drudgery. The banana is in your hands. Having fun and you
will be instantly likeable, and thus more likely to gain laughs.

Joke Killers to watch out for

There are some additional factors that will prevent you from being funny. As you
put on your new humor hat, make sure you do the following.

Caution 1. Make your humor self-deprecating

The best humor is self-directed. I find it preferable to point out my faults before
others do. In that way, I admit my fallibility while indicating that I can take a joke. It
sets a benchmark for the training environment. In addition, humor that is self-
deprecating is less likely to offend others.

Caution 2. Be yourself.

Humor will not work if it is forced. When people laugh with you during your
everyday life, it is not because you have taken on a persona, it is because they enjoy
who you are and the humor that naturally emanates from your humanity. Be who
you are. Allow that naturalness to create your humor for you. I can offer an
example by picking on myself. It has been said that I look stiff and formal. I cannot
help it: it just is. That continence could have prevented me from being funny.
Instead, I have learned to use it. Because of my look, I dress and act slightly
pompous. That pomposity allows me to say and do fairly absurd things. The
disconnect between how I look and the craziness of what I say or do creates surprise
and allows natural humor emerges.

Caution 3. Avoid offensive material.

Political, religious or ethnic jokes are all not worth the telling. Even if some
members of your audience respond with laughter, other members will become so
offended that they will shut down (or shut your training down) and make learning
difficult if not impossible. In addition, blue material should be avoided at all costs.
Risqué lines often obtain their laughs from the unease and discomfort of the
audience. In a nightclub setting, that may be appropriate. But in a learning
environment, where comfort is directly tied to positive results, creating discomfort
for a cheap laugh is worse than insulting, it's stupid.

Caution 4. Never say you are going to tell a joke.

The best way to insure that your joke won't work is to telegraph it in advance.
Remember, in previous months we discovered that much of the laughter results
from learner surprise that you have told a joke. The very act of announcing your
intentions in advance almost guarantees a failure of the joke.

So, you are funny. You just didn't know it. Take the actions steps listed above and
you too can find your funny.

(2) In addition to remembering funny jokes that you have heard recently, make a point of remembering funny quotes and funny remarks. Try and remember as many as you can and then use them at appropriate times.

Here again, the internet is a wonderful source of extremely clever and funny quotes. Very often these funny quotes were made by famous people. In using the quotes, at an appropriate time at a party, it's not necessary to pretend that the remark is something you made up yourself. If the remark is really clever and witty, it will be just as funny if you acknowledge the source.

For example, it's really easy to remember the remark that Winston Churchill made at a party when a lady sitting next to him informed him, very loudly, and in an aggressive manner: "Sir, you are drunk!" Churchill immediately replied: "Yes Madam, you are right. But you are ugly. Tomorrow I will be sober".

(3) When you tell a story, instead of making fun of someone else, in order to show how clever you are, it's a good idea to make fun of yourself. You don't have to do so in a way that makes you look like a complete idiot. Rather do so in a way that describes an embarrassing situation that happened to you.

That's Funny - The Use of Humor in Persuasion

I find it funny that I am about to tell you why humor is such a great tool in the art of persuasion. It just seems so obvious. After all, humor speaks in universal truths about human existence, and invites people to laugh at themselves and even laugh with others at themselves. Or laugh at others in blissful ignorance that the joke is really about themselves.

Everyone loves quotes. And all speakers use them. What is so funny about quotes? How about quoting myself? Because, as I say quite often, "United we stand, but divided, we can not stand each other!" And I could not agree more. Humor breaks down the barriers that keep us divided and polarized. Humor builds bridges to bring us together. Humor attracts interest, puts people on common footing, and creates an atmosphere of goodwill that is conducive to meaningful communication. Humor discharges resistance, overcomes stubbornness, and creates opportunity for dialog. Humor has such a positive impact on people that more and more businesses (not the dead-serious ones though!) use it to train and retain employees. Humor is a powerful tool for the person serious about creating positive change. Why? Well, in case I haven't made the point, not because I say so. It's a fact. Humor is persuasive.

But let's be honest. Not all humor is equally funny. In fact, bad humor is also one of the fastest ways to put people in a bad mood, undermine relationships, create hard feelings, offend sensibilities, poison an atmosphere and destroy what could have been a great event, project, team, business, or community.

And I'd say that it is safe to say that not all funny is funny to all. In-jokes are usually only funny to the people in on the joke, the people who shared the experience with you. They tend to leave everyone else drawing a blank. But sometimes, you tell an in-joke, the people who are in start laughing, and the people who aren't in on the joke start laughing too! All the while, they are wondering, and maybe even saying, "What's so funny?" because they want to know why they are laughing.

Still, you just can't please all the people all the time. If it is tasteless, spare us. Unless you know us and know that our taste runs all the way to tasteless. And really, the only way to know what is and isn't funny is to know as much as you can about who you are talking to and find out what you can about what they find funny.

So just how do we use our wits to keep our wits about us? How do we use humor in our communications in order to foster goodwill, camaraderie and common ground? How do we persuade with humor?

For starters, be non-verbal! No, no, I don't mean don't say anything! Although there are people who, without saying a word, can make people laugh, and even change people's minds, because they're funny to watch. Just as there are people who provoke laughter in others by acting funny, looking funny, and sounding funny, regardless of what they say. But I'll say this about the way people look and sound. Nonverbal humor makes verbal humor funnier. And a nonverbal lack of humor can make verbal humor as flat as a pancake, flat as a board, as flat as a tropical ocean on a hot windless day when the sweat pouring from your skin is hot enough to make tea but you have no water to drink because someone convinced you that taking a walk under the cloud cover that is now gone would be great exercise, and you find yourself shouting to the heavens 'THIS IS A VACATION? DEAR LORD, WHY DO YOU WANT ME TO DIE?" and your anguished cry has no echo and falls flat and the silence makes the heat seem even hotter than had you said nothing at all. But I digress.

The point I'm trying to make is that verbal humor, without nonverbal humor to support it, can be risky business, like writing that previous sentence. It was really funny when I was saying it, but you couldn't see me. I could. Trust me, it was VERY funny. But all you have are the words. In fact, one of the un-funniest things you can try to do with words is write about what is funny. It's painful! But the good news is, pain is funny. Keep laughing at me or with me and I'll explain in a moment.

While there are inherently funny words, (newcular instead of nuclear, for example) you will find more funny in a facial expression, a playful voice tone, and an exaggerated gesture. And you can use words to create a funny picture, to imply an accent, or to demonstrate that you have plenty of attitude. Y'all need me to draw you a pitcher? Well, pitcher this. Cartoons ever make you laugh? Oh yes, they did. And how? Through the dishing out of incredible amounts of pain. And why did that make you laugh? The painful fact is, that...

Pain is funny. Comedians understand that pain, whether physical or emotional, is what's so funny about humor. Not all pain. Just the kind you survive. And pain is funnier when it is happening to someone else. Not so much when it happens to you. Except, that is, for the people who watch it happening to you. They may be quite amused. They're thinking that it's better you than them. They are laughing at your expense. Nice of you to give them such a treat. Which gives us a new twist on an old adage. "If you can't laugh at your own pain, laugh at someone else's." So it should be no surprise that...

Ridicule can be ridiculously funny. Making fun of serious things can be funny, just as being serious about funny things can be funny. Though in this age of the politically correct, you should be very careful about who and what you make fun of. Ridiculing yourself is always a good bet. There was a time when laughing at 'the other' was funny, whether it was a racial difference or a gender difference. Actually, gender differences are still funny. This is universal, so everybody gets it. Like that time I was working with a couple in my counseling practice. And the husband says to me, "She's crazy, doc!" I replied, "Funny, she says the same thing about you!" And he says, without a trace of irony, "Well that just proves how crazy she is!"

Now, I'm frequently asked the probing question, 'So you think that's funny?' And if you don't know what that means, then let me explain it to you. I'll type really slow so you can keep up. The that they refer to when they say that is... sarcasm. And my answer is, it sure can be. As in, "Ah, I see you've set aside some time today to humiliate yourself in public!" As in, "I like you. You remind me of when I was young and stupid." As in "I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter." As in, "Well, you probably said it without thinking, the way you do most things." As in, "I've had an incredible evening. But not tonight."

Sarcasm aims at a target. And it is not always funny, unless it is used the way I use it. Because I use sarcasm in stories about other people, not about you. In those stories, I sometimes first have other people use it on me. Then, as part of the same stories, I use it on them, because they deserve it. My audience seems to agree. HAH! But I never use it directly on anyone. Except my former best friend, who tells me that hurtful sarcasm means, "I love you" in his hometown. I'm not sure if that's true. If it is, he must love me a lot. But then, if he had an honest opinion, it would probably wind up be in solitary confinement. My biggest regret is that, when we were friends, I could never quite lower my I.Q. enough to have a meaningful dialog with him. He's inscrutable, like a Vulcan, only without the ears, or the depth. But I hear that a mind reader offered to read his mind for half price!

By the way, I used to think that the single best response to sarcasm was "I know you are, but what am I?" I've since learned a funnier response. Take it at face value, as if it is meant to be exactly what it says. Someone tells you "Do you tie your own shoes?" You reply, "Yes, as a matter of fact, I do." Keep that up and after awhile, they'll take their sarcasm and go away. "Don't let the door hit you on the way out!" you can yell helpfully after them, while ironically hoping that it does!

Ok, kiddo, go have some fun with funny, and while you're at it, make your persuasion proposition funny too! If it was already funny, make it funnier. If you want to know more, pay attention. Because funny happens all the time. And a quick post-mortem after the fact just may reveal how a deadpan affect worked, or how a joke killed an audience. But no matter what you do, when you finish this article, you should walk, don't run, to your own happy place, find some funny and have a great laugh at my expense. Me, I'm going to go play with words, because that's what I like to do when I'm not playing with them here.

And What Do You Do? ... How To Know When You're a Writer!

It's the funniest thing. When someone asks me what I do for a living, I tell them, "I'm a writer." The standard response is, "No, really, what do you do?" Somehow, I always flounder in the conversation because I never expect that type of response.

So, how do you know you're a real writer?

It has to be a certain look or smell that identifies a writer. Is it the turtleneck and mothball odor that gives it away? Perhaps it's the old blue jeans you wore for a week or two.

Generally, my rule of thumb is: if you can sell your ideas and make money writing, you're "a writer!" If you sit and write all day long and never sell anything, then "you write." So, in summary: "you write until you become a writer!"

But, this is very true! To become a writer, you have to write every day. You should think of a dozen or so topics and write about them. This will help you learn your style and develop your skills.

If you write, but are not yet a writer, here's an objective! Write, until you sell something. Once you get the money, pay your gas bill. Now, you're a writer! But, don't stop with just one article, keep going!

Hey Ed! Say something funny.

It just doesn't happen like that. I'm not a funny guy. If I sit down and design something funny, I can be hilarious. But, I can't just say something funny.

On the other hand, ideas are things that just happen. But, developing and writing that idea takes work. The act of writing doesn't "just happen."

When writing about an idea, you have to research the idea to determine if it's feasible. If it looks good, then you have to research it again to become an expert---or at least knowledgeable on the topic.

The other point to writing is that, even as a Technical Writer, you have to feel the writing. This goes back to one of my previous articles, "Natural Writing." You have to learn your verbal style before you can become comfortable with your written style. Once you understand your own style of communicating, stick with it as it's the most comfortable place to start. Let it evolve, but stay with it to ensure that the writing feels good and flows.

And, have I read something you've written?

I don't even know if they can read much less if they've ever read something I've written. If the name rings a bell, probably so! The point is that most people won't know about you unless you write!

Become a prolific writer and write for the sake of writing. The more you write, the better you become, the more you publish, and the more people will read your work.

One of the biggest stumbling blocks for a writer is "fear." Don't be afraid to send your work out. People will compliment you and criticize you. In all cases, take the feedback, positive or negative, graciously. At least they took the time to read your work!

I write stuff, too.

When I was young, I wrote on the bathroom stalls in Catholic elementary school. I created some spectacular poetry! When Sister Mary Butch, of the Order of the Most Vicious Blood, caught me, that was the end of my career, and nearly my life. Everybody can write, but not everybody can be a writer.

Being a writer is not just putting words on the paper. It involves research, organization, thought, creative wordplay, and the ability to sit still long enough to put it all together.

This short article is a reasonable example. It started out in my head as "Why write?" and evolved based on some thought. Writing is the evolution of ideas into something between fact and fiction. It's the evolution of presentation into something coherent to the largest audience. It's a fantasy that turns into a reality once you figure out what it is that you're trying to say!

And, what made you write?

It wasn't some miracle or premonition. Honestly. Someone made me madder than a hornet. To make a long story short, I designed and developed an idea for a product that would save a previous employer a lot of money. I did all of the financial work, software engineering, implementation, and testing to prove the idea.

During my presentation, the senior engineers scoffed at the idea. So I took my notes, wrote a manuscript, and submitted it to various publishers. A month later, a publisher picked up the manuscript and we signed a contract to publish it. It all took off from there! That's it!

There are a million reasons to write, but I found later that you don't need a reason if you love it. It takes just one situation to get you started into the addictive world of writing! But, all you really have to do is ...

Just write!

I don't write on bathroom walls anymore because it's too hard for our housekeeper to keep up with the work. But, I do carry around a palmtop just in case I get an idea! For now ... just write everything you can as often as possible. Once you get the hang of it, writing becomes an addiction. Write because you can take an idea and tell it to the rest of the world. Write because your wife has another headache. Write because you can make money. Write so that the next time someone asks what you do, you can say,

"I'm a writer!"
